Recent Mission Point Resort Review: "A stay on Mackinac Island is always fun, but likely to be expensive. The hotel everyone wants to stay at, the Grand, is shockingly expensive, and many of the others can be pretty high, as well. I kept reading bad reviews of Mission Point Resort, but all I can say is that those readers had a very different experience than I did. I booked at the last  moment for a solo stay while my wife was away on a trip I didn't want to join her on, and everything about the hotel was wonderful. Resorts, by definition, are machines to extract money from guests; the key is whether they provide value for money. When I checked in, the polite suggestion was made that an upgrade would give me a view I wouldn't regret; that evening, I stayed at the resort for dinner rather than taking the trip either by carriage or on foot, to one of the restaurants I had in mind associated with the Grand Hotel, the Woods or the Jockey Club. I didn't regret either decision. I had a good view of the lake and the grounds from my hotel room, which was very clean and well-appointed; the restaurant was actually superior. I ate at Chianti, the upscale Italian place on site that is apparently somewhat new. Knowing from experience that single diners are not always appreciated at peak times... they'll want you to eat at the bar or tuck you out of the way or something... I came a little later. They seated me promptly at a small table in front of the glass windows with a beautiful view of the lake, and beside the open door so I could enjoy the breeze. It was the table I would have chosen if it had been up to me to begin with. Service was attentive but not intrusive and very professional, the sort of thing I normally associate with very high-end restaurants. It was far better than the prices at Chianti, which were quite conventional for a nice restaurant in Michigan.
